Semax

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide (a 7-amino-acid chain) evaluated for its potent nootropic (cognitive-enhancing), neuroprotective, and neurorestorative properties. Developed by the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the 1980s and 1990s, it is a modified analogue of a fragment of Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH).While its structure is based on a stress hormone, Semax has been structurally modified to completely strip away any hormonal or adrenal effects. In Russia, it has a long clinical history and is approved as a prescription medication to treat ischemic stroke, transient ischemic attacks, optic nerve disease, and cognitive decline. However, it is not FDA-approved or widely authorized for clinical care in the United States.
